Social media
Social media, the one thing it seems we cannot live without anymore.
I was (and maybe partly still am) the same.
First thing in the morning was to check Facebook - I could've missed something serious in the few hours I was asleep. Something that really needed my attention.
Of course that was and is utter bullshit. There is nothing on there that I NEEDED to know or NEEDED to fix.
I was 'friends' with lots of people, liked way too many pages and was a member of an endless amount of groups. I was feeling like it took more and more of my attention and I always felt like I couldn't keep up.
Last year Facebook was the medium that really pulled me down, I got triggered every other post, if not from a friend's post or a post from one of the media pages I followed. And I'm not even thinking about the reactions I read on those posts. Those were even worse for me.
I was also someone who posted multiple times a day. I felt like I needed to do that and I never got much feedback so that made me feel worthless too.
So on August 1st I decided enough was enough. I haven't posted anything on there since that day. I even suspended my account for a while and my time spend on there is only a fraction of what it used to be. On that day I also deleted some 'friends', disliked a lot of pages and deleted my membership for a lot of groups.
From that moment on, I felt free.
We don't realise how social media influences our lifes and our mental health. We should guard our boundaries and try to have a healthy relationship with it. Because they can also have positive influences. They connect people, you get to know people you wouldn't know otherwise, 'friends' can support you, you learn new things,...
Yes, I'm still on Instagram and occasionally on Twitter, but for me those are a total different vibe. There is much less negativity on Instagram - at least on the accounts I follow. I can also be more me and I don't feel the pressure to post. Twitter is another story. I know that platform can be really vicious but I only follow celebrities on there that don't have Instagram and I don't mingle in the fandoms, so a lot less toxicity.
So tell me, what social media do you use or not?
