A distraction is momentary - an escape helps you heal
This quote is from the musical and now Netflix film 'The Prom'.
You can find the quote in the song 'We look to you' and when I first heard it, it immediately hit home.
The song is about how one of the characters - Mr Hawkins - loves theatre. He sings:
"My days have little glamour. Writing memos, making calls"
......
"That's why I love the theatre. It's how I escape"
The stage actor - Dee Dee - answers:
"So, theatre is a distraction? Is that what you're saying?"
Mr. Hawkins responds:
"No, a distraction is momentary. An escape helps you heal"
"We look to you
To take us away
From the soul-crushing jobs
And emasculating pay
When our lives come up short
And our hopes are sad and few
You whisk us off to some place strange and new
We look to you
In good times and bad
The worlds you create
Make the real ones seem less sad
The curtain goes up
And every now and then it feels as if we're coming home again"
This is exactly how I feel about music, theatre, musical and Disney. It's my escape. A big part of the reason I'm still here.
Disney has been my lifebuoy for the last few years. It makes me so happy. I always had a soft spot for Disney - I grew up with a lot of Disney movies - but the last few years Disney has become really special to me.
It gave me joy.
It learned me lessons.
It showed me that Disney had no age.
It showed me how to love.
It kept me dreaming.
It showed me that imagination is not a bad thing.
Like Walt Disney once said:
"Laughter is Timeless.
Imagination has no Age.
Dreams are Forever."
For that I thank Disney and all the Disney castmembers!
Music / theatre / musical has been my escape for as long as I can remember.
It gave me wonderful and sad memories.
It made things happen and softened the blow when things didn't work out.
It gave me friends and it learned me that people are selfish.
It made me happy and made me cry.
It gave me insights that the spoken word never could have done.
It was there in my darkest hours and in my happiest moments.
For the music & theatre I especially want to thank The Script, Westlife, P!nk, Niels Destadsbader (Dutch), The Beatles, One Direction, Louis Tomlinson, Backstreet Boys, Musical 40-45 (Dutch).
A very special thank you to Hamilton (the musical, mixtape, music) and Panic! at the Disco for keeping me alive the last year!
